What is Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support is a rights-led, evidence-informed approach. It considers the person’s communication, health, relationships, environment, routines, strengths, preferences, and unmet needs. The aim is to improve quality of life, build skills, create supportive environments, and reduce the likelihood and impact of behaviours of concern.
Functional behaviour assessment
A Behaviour Support practitioner gathers information through consultation, record review, observation, and assessment. The practitioner looks for patterns and contributing factors, then develops hypotheses about the purpose or function of the behaviour.
Behaviour Support Plans
An interim or comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan documents practical strategies for the participant and their care team. Plans may include proactive environmental changes, communication strategies, skill development, response guidance, safety information, and steps to reduce restrictive practices.
